MP slams ‘Staircase Tax’ on small businesses

Bury North MP James Frith has hit out at the government’s ‘Staircase Tax’, calling it “punitive and unfair”.

The new charge has been retrospectively applied to business rates charges for thousands of small businesses and applies to communal spaces, corridors and car parking in communal buildings shared by different businesses.

James said:

“As a former small business owner myself I sympathise with local businesses who are left worried about balancing the books by this punitive and unfair charge, which has been backdated to 2015 and landed many businesses with bills in the thousands of pounds which they can’t afford.

“I have submitted a Parliamentary Question to the Chancellor and Communities Minister asking for an explanation for this damaging penalty and imploring them to address it before the Budget.”
